Film4 Summer Screen 2008
The Exorcist

Why you should see

The Exorcist
A sensation on its release in 1974, The Exorcist is the black concentrate of which all modern horror films are mere dilutions. The demonic possession of 12-year-old Regan, played by Linda Blair, and the desperate efforts of Fathers Merrin and Karras to free her from the evil plays out against a background of 1970s family breakdown: an eruption of ancient evil into a modern world of divorce and psychotherapy. Renowned for its chilling images of head-spinning, green vomit and masturbation-by-crucifix, The Exorcist retains its unsettling power through a compelling storyline about a faith-in-crisis and the ultimate personal sacrifice.
